Yashasvi Bhupendra Kumar Jaiswal is an Indian cricketer who has established himself as a hard-hitting opening batsman and all-rounder in domestic cricket for Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was born on December 28, 2001, in Suriyawan, Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh. He was interested in cricket from a young age but had limited access to training facilities due to his poor financial background.

In 2012, at the age of eleven, Jaiswal moved to Mumbai to pursue his cricketing dreams. Initially, he struggled to find a place to stay due to his financial situation, but his uncle Santosh helped him secure a job at a dairy farm where he was allowed to sleep. However, he was eventually ousted from the dairy farm as he was unable to work efficiently due to his daytime studies at Anjuman Islam Urdu High School in CST Mumbai and cricket practice in the afternoons.

He later joined the Muslim United Cricket Club in Azad Maidan, Mumbai, where he slept in the gardener’s tent. To support himself financially, he sold panipuris and fruits in the evening. Despite not liking to sell them, he sold them to make ends meet. One day, while practicing in the nets, Jaiswal was noticed by coach Jwala Singh, who was impressed with his seamless batting on a hard pitch where other cricketers were struggling. Singh took him under his wing and provided him with a place to stay. Jaiswal’s father made Singh his legal guardian, and Jaiswal began his cricketing journey under Singh’s guidance.

Jaiswal is six feet tall and Weight 75 kilograms. He has black hair and brown eyes. His chest measures 40 inches, his waist measures 32 inches, and his biceps measure 12 inches.

Jaiswal was born into a Hindu family. His father, Bhupendra Jaiswal, owns a small shop in Bhadohi, and his mother, Kanchan Jaiswal, is a homemaker. He has two brothers named Tejaswi and Pradeep, both of whom also play cricket, and a sister named Ekta.

Jaiswal made his debut in the Harris Shield Tournament for the Anjuman Islam Urdu High School, CST Mumbai, in the 2012-13 season. He gained recognition for his all-around performance in the Giles Shield Tournament, where he scored 319 runs and took 13 wickets for 99 runs against Raja Shivaji Vidyamandir. His performance was registered in the Limca Book of Records as the best inter-school all-around performance.

Jaiswal lacked confidence due to his financial struggles, but he received support from former Indian cricket legends Dilip Vengsarkar and Wasim Jaffer, who counseled him and trained him at the Dilip Vengsarkar Foundation Academy.

Jaiswal played for Mumbai United Sports Club, Sachin Tendulkar XI, and Mumbai Police Sports Club in various tournaments. He played for Mumbai Under-16, Mumbai Under-19, Mumbai Under-23, and Mumbai teams in domestic cricket and became a prolific all-rounder and a run machine by scoring more than 50 centuries and taking over 200 wickets. He made his debut in the Ranji Trophy on January 7, 2019, against Chhattisgarh. He became the youngest player to score a double century in List A cricket, achieving the feat at the age of 17 years and 292 days.

Career in Domestic Cricket

Yashasvi started his cricketing journey with the Anjuman Islam Urdu High School in Mumbai during the 2012-13 season of the Harris Shield Tournament. However, his breakthrough performance came in the Giles Shield Tournament, where he scored 319 runs and took 13 wickets for 99 runs against Raja Shivaji Vidyamandir. This performance earned him a place in the Limca Book of Records as the best inter-school all-rounder.

Yashasvi’s financial background was a hurdle in his confidence and cricketing career. However, he was counselled by former Indian cricketing legends Dilip Vengsarkar and Wasim Jaffer, and Vengsarkar also trained him at his academy, Dilip Vengsarkar Foundation Academy. Later on, he played for Mumbai United Sports Club, Sachin Tendulkar XI, and Mumbai Police Sports Club in different tournaments. He made his debut in the Ranji Trophy on 7 January 2019 against Chhattisgarh.

Yashasvi emerged as a prolific all-rounder and a run-machine by scoring more than 50 centuries and taking more than 200 wickets. He became the youngest double-centurion in List A cricket by scoring 203 runs off 154 balls against Jharkhand in the 2019-20 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He played for the West Zone, India A, and the Rest of India in the domestic circuit.

International Career

In 2018, Yashasvi was selected for India Under-19 and helped the team win the 2018 Under-19 Asia Cup. He was the highest run-scorer with 318 runs and won the Player of the Tournament award. He later played for India Under-19 A and India Under-19 Red in different tournaments. He played for India Under-19 in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup and scored 105 runs not out in the semi-final against Pakistan. He also scored 88 runs in the final against Bangladesh; however, India lost the final and finished as runners-up. Yashasvi scored 400 runs in the World Cup at an average of 133.33 and won the Player of the Tournament award. He later played for the India Under-23 team in international tournaments.

Yashasvi’s Performance in IPL

In the 2020 IPL auction, Rajasthan Royals (RR) acquired Yashasvi for Rs 2.4 crores against his base price of Rs 20 lakhs. He made his debut IPL match on 22 September 2020 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and scored 6 runs. On 2 October 2021, he made his maiden IPL fifty by scoring 50 runs off 21 balls against CSK at a strike rate of 238.10. RR retained him for Rs 4 crores before the 2022 IPL mega auction. On 30 April 2023, he scored his maiden IPL hundred by scoring 124 Runs.
